DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

Diagnosing Bunions

To determine the severity of your bunion, an assessment of medical history, general health and symptoms, as well as a physical examination of the foot will be first carried out.

Diagnostic imaging tests like X-rays, CT or MRI scans can also be ordered to assess the severity of the bunion, the degree of misalignment and whether there are any changes in surrounding bones.

The Goal of Bunion Treatment
  • Alleviate bunion pain
  • Improve mobility of the foot
  • Correct misalignment and deformity

Depending on the severity of the bunion, there are various treatment methods available—ranging from conservative methods to surgical procedures. Your doctor will recommend the most suitable treatment tailored to your needs.

Bunion Pain
Following a detailed evaluation, our orthopaedic specialist will tailor a suitable bunion treatment for lasting relief.
Conservative Treatment for Mild Bunions
Conservative treatments may be used in mild cases of bunions, and are generally more suitable to slow the progression of bunions and to alleviate pain.
Orthotics
Use of specialised devices like protective pads, shoe inserts, toe spacers and splints to provide support and limit abnormal foot movements.
Medications
Anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief medications may be prescribed to alleviate pain and inflammation.
Footwear Modifications
Choosing footwear with wide or open toe box can prevent the toes from getting compressed, easing bunion pain and discomfort.
Surgery for Moderate to Severe Bunions
Bunion surgery, or bunionectomy may be needed when conservative treatments fail to provide effective relief or for cases of severe bunions. Dr Yung Shing Wai specialises in minimally invasive bunion surgery and has over 30 years of experience providing safe and reliable surgical removal of bunions.
Osteotomy
A procedure that involves small cuts in the bones to realign the joint and straighten the big toe.
Exostectomy
This method involves the removal of the bunion from the big toe joint, and may be performed in conjunction with soft tissue correction to reduce pressure and correct toe alignment.
Soft Tissue Repair
As part of the bunion correction procedure, this method helps to shorten loose tissues or tighten the soft tissues around the big toe joint.
Arthrodesis
Usually performed for cases of severe arthritis or joint damage arising from bunions, where the damaged joint surface is removed before placing metal plates or screws to stabilise the bones, allowing them to heal.
